Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy on charges that he started a fire Dec. 28 in a downtown house.
On the day of the blaze, firefighters arrived at the abandoned house at 13 Nunan St. at 9:55 a.m. The fire damaged two neighboring houses and three vehicles, and it took 30 minutes for the crew to put it out. The boy, whose name will not be released because he is a juvenile, is charged with one count of third-degree arson, three counts of malicious injury to personal property, and three counts of malicious injury to real property. He is being held at the Juvenile Detention Center.
The Charleston Police Department said in a news release that the arson case is not related to the string of other suspicious fires that happened on the peninsula in the past decade. The houses that burned on Dec. 28 were, however, located near the Septima P. Clark Expressway, which is where the bulk of the suspicious fires have taken place.
