The Republican presidential primary stampede has arrived in the Palmetto State, bringing with it the requisite attack ads, combative rhetoric, and train of national media commentators.

Things could get ugly. They often do.

So to help you see beyond the horse-race politicking, we asked each candidate to write a direct appeal to you, the South Carolina voters. Some of them got back to us; others didn’t (we’re looking at you, Mitt).
