- Videographer Brooks Quinn and producer Joel Frank interview Home Team BBQ’s Tony Mackie for the Mac Leaphart documentary
The Mac’n at the Drome benefit show at the Hippodrome on Jan. 28 drew a sold-out crowd and collected a lot of cash. The event was a festive rock ’n’ roll showcase designed to raise funds for local songwriter Mac Leaphart as he recovers from brain surgery. Promoters Ben Bounds and Joel Frank reported last week that ticket sales, donations, and funds raised from silent auctions, raffles, and food sales came close to their goal of $10,000. Leaphart and his family were in attendance as dozens of local and visiting musicians performed original songs from his repertoire.
A full-length video documentary on Leaphart and the benefit show is in the works as well. Local videographers Brooks Quinn and David Keller shot numerous interview segments with Leaphart’s bandmates and colleagues before the show, and they presented the edited clips on the big screen between songs during the concert. The interview footage and concert footage will comprise much of the final documentary.
“Brooks and David are the primary producers and videographers,” Bounds says. He and Frank will act as the doc’s executive directors and producers. “I would say it’s going to be about 90 percent about the show itself,” Bounds adds. “I’m hoping the film will be manufactured and ready for distribution sometime early this summer. I’m hoping the release dates for the DVD and Mac’s new album aren’t more than a few months apart.”
The documentary will likely be available for download as well as on disc. Visit macleaphart.com and follywoodrocks.com for more.
