Charleston pop/rock band the Explorers Club is in high gear this month as they prepare for the official release of their long-awaited new studio album Grand Hotel. The disc is scheduled for release via Rock Ridge Music (with distribution via ADA) on Tues. Feb. 14. The label sent the first single, “Run Run Run,” to Triple A and non-commercial radio in January.
This afternoon (Feb. 3), guitarist/vocalist and co-songwriter Jason Brewer sent City Paper a heads up on one of the many positive reviews that are already pouring in. The Huffington Post’s Kristi York Wooten writes, “Music nerds (like me) who are in touch with their inner Burt Bacharachs will salivate over the production values this Charleston, South Carolina sextet employees on its latest decidedly-retro collection. These guys sing so sweetly together, it’s hard to believe The Explorers Club’s (five!) vocalists don’t also share a last name (Wilson, anyone?).”
The Explorers Club have spent last summer and fall polishing the final mixes of Grand Hotel in L.A. by former Beach Boys producer Mark Linett. Look for City Paper contributor Stratton Lawrence’s review of the album in this week’s music section.
Brewer, Dave Ellis (guitars, mandolin, accordion, percussion, vocals), Wally Reddington (bass, vocals), Justin James (guitar, steel guitar, vocals), Paul Runyon (keyboards, vocals), and Kyle Polk (drums) played a number of shows around the Southeast in January, and they hot the road for another trio up the East Coast this week. Their next local show is at the Pour House on Fri. March 2.
