When Chris McLernon’s not playing bass with local party-rock band Weird Science, the Charleston-based musician writes, arranges, and records songs and jingles for Two Heads Music, his L.A.-based company that provides original music and jingles for movies, TV shows, radio, and advertising. He also cranks the reverb dials on his amps with a surf-rock side project called Big Mick and the Curl, an instrumental band featuring McLernon on guitar and Marc Danzeisen on drums.

The duo is stoked about their 11-song debut album Not of This Surf, a Ventures-esque collection. Recorded at Sausage Factory Studios and Cowatujunga Studios in Burbank, Calif., it’s a gnarly, West Coast retro-twang set with enough tubular sound that might give those local beach bums Jason and the Juggernauts the shaka sign and a run for their coin.
