Moments into the two-minute Pizza Plunge at Mellow Mushroom Avondale on Wednesday night, plungers spontaneously erupted into a full-on pizza war, pelting each other with crust, cheese, and even some entire sections of pizza pie. The food fight was epic.
Emcee and co-owner Johnny Hudgins calmly encouraged the crowd to get back to searching the two massive pizzas for prizes — “Spend more time digging and less time throwing!” — and they surprisingly did just that. Tucked inside the pies were dice, skateboards, and other tiny trinkets representing different rewards for the plucky pizza plungers. The big win was free pizza for a year, represented by two hidden keys.
The pizza plunge was Mellow’s way of celebrating their one-year anniversary in Avondale. And what could be better than letting hordes of hungry people totally destroy your beautiful restaurant right before dinner service?
They encouraged attendees to come dressed in costume, and we spotted gold diggers, a beer-guzzling Hans, and a hot dog partying it up. The winner was Cason T. Hund, who walked away with a VIP SweetWater brewery tour.
