Ever wanted to meet somebody who’s been in outer space? Ever wanted to know how space travel affects human beings? On Tuesday morning, you can have both of those wishes fulfilled at once. Dr. Robert L. Satcher will speak on the topic of musculoskeletal health in astronauts at 7 a.m. in the Medical University of South Carolina Bioengineering Building (68 President St., Charleston), Room 112.
NASA selected Satcher as a candidate for space travel in May 2004, and he flew on the November 2009 STS-129 shuttle mission, which delivered two payload platforms and about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts to the International Space Station. He was the first orthopedic surgeon in space, and he has logged more than 259 hours outside the Earth’s atmosphere. He is currently on staff as a surgical oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
