A parking lot on Meeting Street Road was partially flooded Monday morning, and a battery service van from AAA had sunk into the ground.
Employees of Charleston Water System, who were pumping water out of the fenced-in lot on Monday, said the flooding occurred after someone ran over a nearby fire hydrant, causing water to gush continuously onto the sandy lot. Eventually, the ground destabilized, and the entire back end of a van that had been parked in the lot fell in.
The lot, which is near the intersection of Meeting Street Road and Tuxbury Lane, belongs to Jennings Towing. Employees there say someone hit the hydrant over the weekend.
