The Charleston Dragon Boat Festival benefiting local cancer survivor programs marked its fifth annual outing on Saturday at Brittlebank Park. Teams of 20 paddled the 48-foot-long Chinese dragon boats, competing in 60 250-meter races during the day-long event.
Highlights: the traditional Chinese Dragon dance weaving among the crowd, the bagpiper playing “Amazing Grace” in honor of the Charleston Fire Department’s fallen comrades, and the Charleston Battery soccer team (which took home Gold in the Men’s Division) giving the crowd a high-spirited victory show on the awards stage.
Most impressively, on a day that made ice-cream cones droop in seconds, the Charleston Fire Department proved how well they can take the heat: by wearing kilts. The Festival raised over $108,000.
