A ceremony on Sullivan’s Island this Saturday will seek to commemorate the Middle Passage, the brutal journey to the Americas across the Atlantic Ocean in which millions of enslaved Africans died of disease, starvation, and suicide while packed into ships.
At 9 a.m. in the Fort Moultrie Visitors’ Center, the 15th annual Charleston Middle Passage Remembrance Program will begin with presentations by National Park Service rangers and local historian Herb Frazier. There will then be a drum-led procession to the beach, where libations
