Now that James Island is officially a town and the City of Charleston isn’t going to put up a fight about it, the town needs to choose its leaders. In advance of the July 31 elections, there will be a candidate forum on July 12 at 6 p.m. in the DNR Auditorium at Fort Johnson (217 Fort Johnson Road, James Island).

Former Mayor William “Bill” Woolsey is running unopposed for the position of mayor, and seven candidates are running for four at-large town council seats:

• Mary Beth Berry
• Leonard A. Blank
• Marilyn T. Clifford
• Betty Sandra “Sandi” Engelman
• Sam Kernodle
• Darren “Troy” Mullinax
• Linda B. Womack

The forum is sponsored by Free James Island, the League of Women Voters, and the American Association of University Women.
