At the very beginning of 2012, we found out that Thomas Brothers Productions — a surf-focused video production company run by brothers Bryant, Ellison, and Robert Thomas — was making their second film, Look to the Tropics. The plan was to document surfers from the U.S. and Australia in California, Nicaragua, and Down Under. And, of course, there’s a big Folly Beach focus. Now, the film has a premiere date: Oct. 5 at 7 and 9 p.m. at the Tides Hotel (one of the sponsors of the movie).
“It is such a rewarding feeling knowing all these people show up to watch something you have created,” Bryant Thomas says. “It’s been in the making for a year now, so when you first have the idea in your head of what you want it to look and sound like, it’s really cool to sit back and watch it on the big screen a whole year later.”
The brothers are planning for the event to be pretty big, with a blow-up screen on the beach, live music, and more. Look to the Tropics features local surfers Kyle Busey and Glenn Tanner, among others. “It’s a movie that every East Coast surfer can relate to,” Bryant says. “Even if you don’t surf, there will be a part in the movie that you can certainly appreciate.”
Look to the Tropics will be on sale at the premiere, as well as at McKevlin’s Surf Shop (another sponsor) and online
at thomasbrothersblog.com. Now that this project is over, the brothers are taking on other production ventures, but they’ll still be filming surfing. “We recently have been traveling the globe, documenting pro surfers lives, travels, and surfing,” Bryant says. “But there’s something about capturing a moment in time at your local spot and sharing it with everyone.”
