One of the best things about hip hop has always been its innate ability to quietly make waves while the rest of pop culture sleeps. Dirty Dave Da Fly Guy, one of the many artists in Charleston often overlooked hip-hop scene, just might be a prime example of a quiet storm looming in the distance waiting to unleash its fury.
Earlier this year, Dirty Dave released his latest mixtape, 1000 Ways to Get Paid, in the Holy City and across the Southeast. Locally, at least, the mixtape has been an unqualified success.
“Usually when a local artist brings in their new CD to us, they usually bring in a box of eight to 10 CDs. That’s it,” says Galen Hudson, manager of Monster Music and Movies, about Dave’s latest, which features contributions from Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, and Gucci Mane. “When Dave and his team brought in the 1000 Ways to Get Paid CDs, they brought in multiple boxes of CDs. We sold out of the CDs in two days.”
Hudson attributes Dirty Dave success to the fact that he’s serious about promoting his music and a growing his fanbase.
