The Spoleto Festival will have some big shoes to fill after this 2013 season. Joseph Flummerfelt recently announced that this upcoming season will be his last as the Artistic Director for Choral Activities.
Flummerfelt has been with Spoleto since it all started in 1977, and since then he’s conducted more than 50 performances for the festival. As a final farewell, he will conduct the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Westminster Choir, and the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra in a performance of Verdi’s Requiem.
In other news, the festival has nominated four new board members: Kay Butler Bachmann, Alicia Gregory, James N. Richardson, Jr., and Anita Zucker. The festival has also expanded its budget and performances. This season, operating costs will be around $6,598,387 and will include more than 150 performances, making this season one of the largest Spoleto festivals in recent history. The season will be announced on Dec. 10.
