A 2012 Green Party candidate for the S.C. House of Representatives has been accused of assault after he allegedly hit an abortion protester with his car outside a West Ashley abortion clinic.
Abortion protester William Gasque told Charleston police that Larry Carter Center, a well-known liberal activist in the Charleston area, hit him in the knee with the fender of a teal sedan coming out of the parking lot at Charleston Women’s Medical Center on the morning of Jan. 12. Gasque was not injured, but he went to the downtown police station to file a complaint four days later.
Gasque, who is retired, says he spends every Saturday morning standing in the right of way outside the clinic parking lot, handing out tracts and trying to convince women not to get abortions. He says he and Center have a history of confrontations.
In last year’s November election for the District 114 House seat, Center came in third place with 1,473 votes behind petition candidate Jill Steinberger (2,512 votes) and incumbent Republican Rep. Bobby Harrell (11,493 votes).
Center could not be reached for comment today. Check charlestoncitypaper.com for more details on this story next week.
