The Charleston Symphony Orchestra just released the lineup for their 2013-2014 season. They’ll be at the Sottile Theatre and Dock Street Theatre again while the Gaillard is closed for renovations.
The new season includes six Masterworks, four Pops, and six Chamber Orchestra concerts — that’s three more events than last year, if anyone’s keeping count.
The Masterworks showcase kicks off Oct. 17-19 with guest conductor Perry So and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Luiken performing Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. Other highlights of the series include Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 (Nov. 14-16), Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique (Jan. 9-11), Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique” (Feb. 6-8), Stravinsky’s Firebird (March 13-15), and Saint-Saëns’ “Organ” Symphony (April 3-5).
The Pop Series begins on Oct. 4 with Fiesta, featuring sultry Latin rhythms, a feisty brass section, and special guest dancers from DanceFX. On Jan. 24-25, Wicked Divas will feature special guest vocalists from Broadway, opera, and pop music singing favorites from the musical Wicked. The Chamber Orchestra Series features works by Mozart, Dvořák, and Rossini.
Meanwhile, the CSO’s Music Director search is drawing to a close. The 2013-’14 Masterworks performances will showcase six guest conductors who are search candidates. Although the Music Director Search Committee will have the final say, audiences will be invited to provide feedback about the candidates’ performances.
In addition to the series concerts, special events, education programs, and ensemble performance dates will be added to the schedule at a later date. The CSO is now taking orders for subscriptions for the 2013-’14 season. Ticket prices will remain the same as last season. For more information, visit CharlestonSymphony.org.
