It seems like every week, some Charleston musician is turning to Kickstarter to fund their forthcoming album. This week it’s local jazz hero and Charleston Jazz Orchestra bandleader Charlton Singleton. After helping friends and fellow musicians with their own Kickstarter efforts, Singleton decided it was time to try out the service for his second album, Soul Cavern. Unlike Singleton’s previous effort, The New Deal, his latest record features all original material. “The music on this album was tailor-made for a band of Charleston musicians I’ve played with for 20 years,” Singleton says. “This music comes from my heart and soul.” Singleton has set a goal of $12,000. That money would go to pay for musicians, production, CDs, and distribution. If he doesn’t reach his goal, the funds are forfeited. There are some great rewards on the line too, from signed albums to a private performance. “I hope people believe in me and my record as an artist,” Singleton says. To donate, visit ‘Soul Cavern’ on Kickstarter.
