Registration for free identity theft protection through a program set up by the South Carolina Department of Revenue in response to last year’s tax record hacking scandal ends on Sunday.
Anyone who has paid state taxes in South Carolina since 1998 is eligible for the free protection provided by international credit monitoring agency Experian. To register, visit protectmyid.com/scdor and enter the enrollment code SCDOR123 or call 866-578-5422 this weekend.
According to SCDOR, the Experian protection includes:
-A free copy of your Experian credit report
-Daily credit monitoring
-Identity theft resolution
-Access to Experian fraud resolution services after service membership expires
-$1 million identity theft insurance
-Protection for minors
The state contracted Experian to provide credit monitoring and identity theft protection after a hacker, suspected to be operating overseas, gained unauthorized access to state tax record servers last fall, stealing millions of taxpayer and business tax records dating back to 1998.
