We’ve got good news for any Shovels and Rope fans who were stoked to hear that the duo was releasing a covers 7-inch on Jack White’s Third Man Records: Turns out Monster Music and Movies is getting copies of the single in limited edition tri-color vinyl. But only 100 people will be lucky enough to own such a special Shovels and Rope release.
As we reported last week, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent have contributed to Third Man’s Blue Series. When musical acts travel through Nashville, Third Man invites them to record a couple of covers for the single series. Shovels and Rope picked Bruce Springsteen’s “Johnny 99” and Tom Waits’ “Bad as Me.”
The 7-inch will be able for purchase on iTunes and at Third Man’s website starting April 2 (and you can pre-order it now). Or just wait and make your way to Monster on Wednesday.
As Monster owner Galen Hudson explains, Third Man often teams up with record stores in artists’ hometowns to offer the limited edition tri-color releases. “It’s been pretty hush hush,” he explains. The store only made an announcement on its Facebook page today. “We’ve been sitting on it until we were allowed to announce it, so not too many people know about it.”
Since it’s such a limited pressing, they’re only selling one per customer, and it’s going to cost S&R obsessives $14.99 (compared to $6.99 for the regular release). You can’t get it online or by phone, but if you call up Monster, they may be willing to hold a copy for you (assuming you get to the store that day to buy it).
Better be quick, though. Hudson has heard that these Blue Series 7-inches typically sell out on day one.
