The weekend forecast is pretty grim at this point what with Tropical Storm Andrea and all. But instead of hating on the rain, we must adapt. And that’s what grills are for.

Though you may not be able to enjoy the entire outdoor cookout experience of backyard football and outdoor porch lounging, you can still keep family and friends happy by grilling delicious meals until the tropical storm passes. Plus, if you stock up on good-to-grill foods now and the power goes out, you can still eat.

Ted Dombrowski, owner and operator of Ted’s Butcherblock, gave us some tips on how to grill during a tropical storm. “You’re best off having something you can cook for a long time that doesn’t need a lot of attention,” he says. He recommends meats that you can set on the grill, keep covered at a low temperature, and leave cooking for a long time, like ribs and pork shoulders, as opposed to meats like hamburgers that require a lot of attention and standing in the rain.

If you’re using a gas grill, Dombrowski recommends stocking up on propane. He cautions against using charcoal, but if you do, make sure it’s covered so you can light it in the rain. “If you’re using charcoal, you would need a charcoal starter,” he says. As for Dombrowski’s favorite rainy-weather grilling meal, his choice is ribs.
