John Barnhardt, a former Trident Tech professor and founder of Barnfly Productions, was recently nominated for an Emmy for his travel show Born to Explore. The show airs every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. on ABC, and Barnhardt’s work is in the running for best cinematography. “I’ve been with this show since the beginning,” he says. “I was the director, cinematographer, and part of the editing team for season one.” The rest of the Born to Explore crew is host Richard Wiese, senior producer Andy Ames, B camera operator Greg Harriott, and finishing editor Jeff MacKey, who was a student of Barnhardt’s and now lives in Summerville. The show is produced by Charleston-based Litton Entertainment.

With Born to Explore, Barnhardt has gotten to journey to every continent except Antarctica and to film everything from venomous snakes to polar bears. “It’s a humbling experience,” he says. “I feel very lucky.”
