The Gibbes Museum of Art just announced its 2013-14 schedule of exhibitions.
Photography and the American Civil War will be on view in the Main and Rotunda Galleries from Sept. 27-Jan. 5 and will feature more than 200 photographs that show the evolving and emotional role of the camera during the War Between the States. The exhibit is on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Romantic Spirits: Nineteenth Century Paintings of the South from the Johnson Collection defines the historical, social, and cultural forces affecting 32 artists of the Romantic movement in the American South — the counterparts of the famed Hudson River School artists. See it between Jan. 17-March 23 in the Main Gallery,
The Great Wave: Japonisme in Charleston will show concurrently with Romantic Spirits. The exhibit explores the influence of Japanese prints on Charleston Renaissance artists.
John Westmark: Narratives will showcase new works by the contemporary narrative painter, including large-scale canvases of women. It runs from April 4-June 29.
And finally, Beyond the Darkroom: Photography in the 21st Century will be on display in the Rotunda Galleries from April 4-June 29. This exhibit includes a variety of photography-based works obtained by the museum over the past decade.
