A bike, painted white and bedecked with flowers, sits on Montagu Street by Lockwood Drive, where it stands as a memorial for Edwin Gardner, a beloved husband, father and friend who loved biking, but passed away after a tragic accident in 2010.

Join fellow cyclists this Saturday in remembering Gardner during the annual RIDEdwin memorial ride, now in its fourth year. The short, police-escorted bike ride will begin with a brief rally at Cannon Park at 9 a.m. All ages are welcome. The event celebrates the feel of community that Gardner loved and his desire to make Charleston more bike-friendly.

โ€œCamaraderie and inclusion are the best part of the events. Everyone feels connected and everyone shows up โ€” from spandex cyclists to families with babies. Even dogs have joined in the ride,โ€ says Pam Sullivan of Charleston Moves.

Before his death, Gardner was an active member of the Charleston community. A skilled kayaker and boat builder, he founded the Mosquito Fleet to teach underprivileged youth about Charlestonโ€™s maritime history and share his love of the water. He was also a member of the Peninsula Task Force that deals with alternative forms of transportation.

RIDEdwin is held annually to keep Gardnerโ€™s visions alive.
