UPDATE: The City of Charleston’s Media Relations department has confirmed that no one from MTV has attempted to contact the city or pull a permit for filming.
Rumors continue to fly that the city of Charleston may soon be welcoming seven strangers and MTV’s camera crews.
There is still no confirmation that The Real World will join us here in the Holy City, although Twitter is awash with people both for and against what would be the fourth reality show to film in the area (after Southern Charm, Southern Girls, and The Dirty South). Some people are tweeting, “Where do I sign up?” while others seem furious with tweets like “This is the last straw.” What will it be like if camera crews join the college crowd in the small bars of King Street or the tourists in the clubs of Market Street?
Some people are so upset with the idea that they’ve started a petition started. Colin Raden created a petition to keep the show away from Charleston, bringing up issues like traffic and the city’s size. According to Live5News, the petition has gained more than 1,000 signatures so far. If you’re one of those in the “hate” camp, you can sign the petition on change.org. If, however, you’re firmly on the “love” side, there’s still time to sign up for a casting call online. The 29th season is looking for hipsters, rappers, drama queens, and anyone else willing to party.
