Peter Max, one of the country’s most recognizable pop artists, will host an art show displaying some of his most famous works at the Art Mecca September 21-22.
“We will have lots of his iconic work,” says Lesley Smith, curator. “Everything from the ‘Cosmic Runner’ to ‘The Statue of Liberty.’” His use of very bright colors and loose brushstrokes makes his work easy to recognize. “Colors are colors, all colors are beautiful,” Max says. “I’m very good at combining colors. I use opposites and I use colors that are next to each other and I just love them.”
The artist can’t pick a favorite from all of his pieces, but he says that it’s usually what he’s working on at the time. “I love every piece,” Max says. “I love it because I know why I painted it in those colors and what went through my mind.”
When he’s not touring for art shows 35-40 weeks of the year, Max is in his studio, where he employs a full-time DJ to play his favorite music to paint to. His work is displayed in government buildings across the world and he has been the Official Artist of five NFL Super Bowls, the World Cup USA, the U.S. Open, the New York Marathon, the Kentucky Derby, and the 2006 Olympics.
There will be an uncrating party on September 14 where guests can enjoy wine and preview Max’s work. Those who buy his pieces between Sept. 14-21 will be put at the front of the line to have their work signed by Max when he comes to the Art Mecca on Sept. 21 and 22 for a reception and meet-and-greet. On these two days, Max will be signing and dedicating his artwork, as well as taking pictures with collectors. Prices range from $2,450 to $87,000.
