[image-1]At the City Paper, we aren’t ones to mourn our community being passed over by national restaurants, but we know that Chipotle holds a special place many peoples’ stomachs. So, we’re sad to report today that the Denver-based burrito chain’s plans to build a Mount Pleasant location won’t pan out after all.

It seems like just yesterday that die-hard burrito fans flocked to the opening of the first Charleston-area Chipotle Mexican Grill in North Charleston near Northwoods Mall. But for some, that haul up I-26 was a drive too far, and the true guacamole grail was the chain’s reported plan to build a second assembly line in Mount Pleasant in November 2012. Well, November came and went–no burrito bowls anywhere near Towne Centre.

(The area isn’t totally burrito-barren, though. Some spots we recommend are, Taco Spot, Yo Burrito (and J.I.’s new YoBo Cantina Fresca), Barberito’s, and your favorite local Mexican spot.)

Checking with Chipotle PR earlier this year, we’d heard that plans for the East Cooper shop had been put off for “several months” and to check back in the summer. Well, last week we got the news:

“I am sorry, I don’t see another for Mount Pleasant.”

Sorry, Stepford. On the bright side, there’s always P.F. Chang’s…
