An attempted traffic stop in Hanahan ended with a fatal shooting of a suspect in North Charleston Monday night. The name of the man who was shot has not been released.
According to Lt. Michael Fowler of the Hanahan Police Department, Hanahan police officers attempted to pull the vehicle over on Yeamans Hall Road in Hanahan for a window tint violation. “The vehicle didn’t speed up and run away but didn’t stop immediately and kind of kept cruising at a slow pace out onto Remount Road and finally pulled over by the Little Caesars [at 1920 Remount Road],” Fowler says.
Fowler says three men and a woman were in the car. When officers asked the people in the vehicle to step out so they could be patted down, Fowler says, one of the men took off running. “Two of my officers gave chase on foot, one was in a car, and somewhere in that time frame, shots were fired,” Fowler says. While the initial attempted traffic stop was in Hanahan, the Little Caesars is at a North Charleston address.
The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is conducting an investigation of the shooting. Fowler says Hanahan police do not yet have an incident report ready to release. “The report won’t be ready for a couple of days,” he says. “A situation like this, you let the officers get at least two good sleep cycles before they’re required to put anything on paper.”
South Carolina state law requires (in Section 56-5-5015-C) that automobile window tints “must be nonreflective and the combined light transmission of the sunscreening device with the factory or manufacturer installed sunscreening material must not be less than 27 percent.” Drivers with tinted windows are also required to affix a certificate of compliance to their vehicles.
