Raise your hand if you predicted that Cecil Shorts would have more receiving yards through three weeks than Calvin Johnson? How many thought Bilal Powell would have more rushing yards than C.J. Spiller and Ray Rice combined? Or that the Chiefs and Dolphins would both be 3-0? If you’re like me, you’re starting to get frustrated with all the fantasy points you are leaving on your bench each week. In honor of the Emmys, here is the Week 3 recap.
Game of Thrones
The Carolina Panthers treated the Giants like they were Starks at a wedding this week. Owners who put Cam Newton on the bench are kicking themselves as he passed for 3 touchdowns and ran for another. While DeAngelo Williams didn’t find the end zone, he was one of only 5 RBs to surpass 100 yards rushing in Week 3.
Head coach Sean Payton has resurrected the 3-0 Saints like the Red Priest Thoros of Myr resurrected Beric Dondarrion. Drew Brees hung 342 passing yards and 4 touchdowns (1 rushing) on the Cardinals and TE Jimmy Graham grabbed 9 balls for 134 yards and 2 TDs. Graham has more fantasy points than all WRs at this point and has certainly justified his draft position. Don’t expect this combo to slow down anytime soon.
After trading away Trent Richardson this week, the Browns were expected to take the Black. Instead this band of misfits and castoffs showed some fight in their fourth quarter come from behind victory against the Vikings. Former Tom Brady backup Brian Hoyer played well in his first start at QB and WR Josh Gordon caught 10 for 146 and a TD. Tight end Jordan Cameron pulled in 3 TDs including one from the punter on a fake field goal.
Aaron Rodgers looked as stoned as Skinny Pete on Sunday. It’s unusual for him to throw more INTs (2) than TDs (1) but despite what the discount double check commercials might have you believe, he hasn’t yet lost his street cred.
Arian Foster and Ben Tate continued their turf war in Texas. Foster ended up with 12 carries for 54 yards and Tate got 9 for 36 as the Texans got beat up by the Ravens defense. Owners who drafted Foster in the first round are not happy about sharing their corner.
After torching the Packers for over 400 yards passing in week 1, Colin Kaepernick has disappeared. He managed only 150 yards passing and 20 yards rushing and the DEA is still searching for the read-option offense that was so effective in the playoffs last year.
American Horror Story
The Giants offense was trapped in a nightmare in Carolina. Eli Manning was sacked 7 times and only completed 12 passes for 119 yards and 1 INT. Hakeem Nicks was held without a pass while Victor Cruz caught 3 for 25. Despite fears that he would fumble, David Wilson saw more playing time in Week 3, but he found little daylight and ran for only 39 yards on 11 carries.
The coven of running backs for the Rams managed only 39 yards rushing against the revamped Cowboys defense. Daryl Richardson played one play before leaving the game with a foot injury and backup Isaiah Pead scratched out 20 yards on 6 carries. Stay away from this scary backfield.
Waiver wire suggestions: Johnathan Franklin RB GB; Brian Hoyer QB CLE; Brian Hartline WR MIA
Go ahead and drop: Lance Moore WR NO; Da’Rel Scott RB NYG; Greg Jennings WR MIN; Kenny Britt WR TEN
