Charleston Fashion Week, get ready. We will soon have more homegrown talent on the runway.

The Charleston County School of the Arts has added a new major — fashion and costume design. Visual arts instructor Marie Nichols will head it up. She’s been teaching an elective program since 2001, and next year it will be expanded into a full major, with daily 90-minute sessions devoted to teaching students sewing and design skills.

SOA is currently accepting applications for rising ninth and 10th graders interested in pursuing the major. The deadline for applying has been extended to Fri. Jan. 24.

If you know an aspiring designer, contact Marie Nichols at (843) 529-4990 or Marie_Nichols@charleston.k12.sc.us for more information.
