Elliotborough’s cheery little art gallery, the George Gallery, is growing by leaps and bounds — since January, owner Anne Elkins has added three new artists, bringing her roster up to seven artists total. The latest additions are painter Brian Coleman, photographer Melinda Mead Scharstein, and well-known Charleston painter Tim Hussey, who’s exhibited in many local venues including the City Gallery.
The George mainly represents abstract artists, and Hussey fits right in. “When I started thinking about opening my own gallery, Tim was on the top of my dream list of artist I’d like to represent,” Elkins says. “His work is an organic fit to the gallery’s aesthetic.”
Hussey’s paintings are darkly humorous, and often vaguely unsettling. “What appeals to me most in his work is how he manifests abstract expressionism, commercial art, history, and the human condition in his canvas,” Elkins says. “Somehow his work contains both the noise inside and outside of our minds through his layers of paint and imagery.”
