The Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival may still be six months away (Nov. 6-9), but the annual four-day festival salute to Italian cinema hosts a fundraiser to give us a preview of what to expect on Thurs. May 8. for La Grande Bellezza.
The event — an evening of food and film — takes its name from the 2014 Oscar Best Foreign Language Film-winner La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty), which, not surprisingly, will be shown when the party takes over College of Charleston’s School of Science and Mathematics (202 Calhoun St.). The film follows Jep Gamardella, a man who wrote a hit novel in his 20s and has been living an extravagant life ever since. Basically, Jep is an aging socialite, and he reflects on his life as he wanders the streets of Rome following his 65th birthday party.
Of course, the Italian-themed party will have food and drinks, because what’s an Italian party without some prosecco and grub? It’ll also have a silent auction, which will help fund the film fest.
Costumes are encouraged. The men should take inspiration from Jep in their wardrobe — think colorful jackets, pocket squares, and oversized glasses. And if the ladies want to pay homage to the female characters in the film, they should don a turban or a cape. Both the gents and the lasses are encouraged to wear a Panama hat (unless you go the Turban route), Jep’s go-to topper. Tickets cost $30 per person or $50 per couple.
