As acts of vandalism go, this one was pretty tame. Even joyful. Maybe it was Festival fever. Some miscreants tossed bubble bath into the fountain at King Street. It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in the Holy City. The rest was inevitable.

We couldn’t help noticing the little girl who waded into the fountain and started having a blast almost immediately. She’s from Mount Pleasant and according to her Dad they were just out for the day downtown when they ran into this surprise. It wasn’t long before the little girl had made a new friend and when they started playing together, they became instant sisters.

Don’t think it was only the younger set who wanted in on the fun, either. Adults came by, swept up a handful of frothy foam and watched the wind pluck it away from them, high into the warm air. Others just wanted to snap pictures of themselves and their friends posing with the foam.

“Bubble Bath Fountain,” it should be noted, does not appear to be an official installation of any city-wide arts festival.

And we’re sure it will cost a ridiculous amount of money to return the fountain to its original un-fluffy state.

We’re also pretty sure everyone who played with the bubbles or couldn’t help smiling while others did, will account it money well spent for an afternoon’s joy.

Sometimes delightful things sneak up on you when you least expect them. In a word: Yay!
