Charleston is a town that knows its history, so it’s only appropriate that Derek Waters stopped in while filming the newest season of his show, “Drunk History,” earlier this year, setting up shop at The Royal American to talk to drunk history buffs … or is that drunk-history buffs … maybe just history buffs and drunks?
As the 34-year old Waters sat in a van outside the Royal cracking “Bang Bus” jokes and being surrounded by fans of the one-of-a-kind show that started on FunnyOrDie.com (but now has a home on Comedy Central) local freelance producer Hunter Boone, assistant location scout for the trip, had a chance to chat with the series’ creator and hear a little more about how Waters enlists his world-famous troupe of comedian pals to act out the boozy version of history’s most notable moments.
Boone, a self-proclaimed fan of the show, describes Waters as, “one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He’s a very appreciative and thankful kinda guy, which made me love the show even more.”
Waters even gave a sneak preview of one segment of the show, which will look at the story of Robert Smalls, the slave who commandeered a steamship and sailed to freedom and who later returned to South Carolina and served in Congress.
The episode will air on Tues. July 29 at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central. The Royal American (970 Morrison Dr.) will be showing the episode on the big screen.
