We’ve been through the froyo phase. In the mid-2000s we even briefly enjoyed a gelato resurgence (RIP George Street Gelateria Modica — you were the wind beneath our panini-eating wings). Now Charleston gets its first heladería shop when Freddo (239 ½ King St.) opens tomorrow at 10 a.m.
An Argentine treat, helado literally translates to ice cream in Spanish, but it’s more akin to gelato thanks to the influence of two-million Italians who moved to the country in the 1800s.
We got to taste four of Freddo’s signature Charleston flavors yesterday — chocolate mousse, Irish cream semifreddo, Italian mascarpone, and dulce de leche light — and the creamy, yet lighter consistency is distinctly different from the American blends we’re used to. Think of helado as like the sexy South American cousin of Ben and Jerry.
The heladeria will have 24 flavors as well as smoothies, ice coffee, sundaes, and specialty coffees.
Freddo has more than 140 store locations in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, and the United Kingdom and is in the midst of a U.S. expansion.
