November is gearing up to be the month of international films. First up is the eighth annual Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival, which will screen Nov. 6-9. The four-day festival brings 12 films to Charleston that are interspersed with special events, including panel discussions and an award ceremony. Of the films being shown, 11 of them are in Italian with English subtitles; The Italian Americans is in English. Some of the other films that are on the schedule include Il capitale umano (The Human Capital), a look through three different perspectives of the same event; Wolf, about Rabbi Benjamin Murmelstein, director of the Terezin ghetto; La Maffia Uccide Solo D’estate (The Mafia Only Kills In The Summer), a romantic comedy about a boy in love with a girl from a dueling family.
Fabio Mollo, director of The South Is Nothing; Claudio Giovannesi, director of Wolf; and Gianluca Migliarotti, director of The Master will all be in attendance. Films cost $6/screening. For more information, visit nuovocinemaitaliano.com.
Then Nov. 14-16 the 2014 AF French Film Festival kicks off. Five award-winning French films, all with English subtitles, will be shown at MUSC’s Basic Science Auditorium (173 Ashley Ave.). Avis de Mistral (My Summer in Provence) will start the fest on Fri. Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The following day will have three screenings, beginning with Paris à Tour Prix (Paris or Perish) at 1:30 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. En Solitaire (Turning Tide) will show and then Jappeloup will play at 7 p.m. Concluding the festival will be Le Jour des Corneilles (The Day of the Crows) at 2:30 p.m.
The festival is put on by the Alliance Française of Charleston, Institut Français, and the Medical University of South Carolina. Tickets are $5 per film; a pass can be purchased for $20 for all five flicks ($15 for Alliance Française members and students under 25). For more information, visit a-f-charleston.com.
