[image-1]Local artist Matt Brooks has won a contest to create a nationally-published cover for the comic book Red Sonja. His winning image, which you can also see at his Instagram account, @happybrooks, is a watercolor portrait of the female barbarian which embeds symbols from her story in her long red hair. “Her hair is her trademark — well, that and a skimpy metal bikini — so what better place to create a collage of her world?” Brooks says.

Comic book art is new territory for Brooks — who daylights as a graphic and web designer — although he’s a lifelong fan of the genre. You can tell just by looking at his custom expressionistic watercolors, which feature superheroes like Batman and the Hulk as subjects in amongst the mere mortals. Check out Brooks’ work on his website, mattbroox.com.
