Accused killer Dylann Roof will have the legal counsel of at least one legendary death penalty defense lawyer, David Bruck, who has defended the likes of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Susan Smith. No word if Judy Clarke, a Furman and SC Law graduate who keeps an Asheville, N.c. office and who also worked on the Tsarnaev and Smith cases as well as the Unabomber, Eric Rudolph, and Jared Lee Loughner cases, will join the case as well. The State Ethics Commission says it has fround probable cause to investigate an ethics complaint filed against South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis over the 2011 hiring of an attorney who the AP calls “a long-time friend” and who went on to receive a $9 million payout as part of a settlement with the Bank of New York. The maximum punishment, if the hire is deemed improper, would be a $2,000 fine and a public reprimand. Source: AP
