For those counting at home, we’re now at day 17 of no local oysters or clams due to DHEC’s oyster and clamming ban. But there is some good news. DHEC announced Saturday that it has lifted the ban on shellfish beds in parts of Georgetown County.
“Water quality data indicate that the approved area in Murrells Inlet is now suitable for harvesting,” said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Section in a press release.
DHEC media relations coordinator Jim Beasley says, “We’re still assessing other areas by conducting water sampling. As other areas are opened, we’ll issue updates.” Charleston County shellfish harvesting remains closed.
Update: On Fri. Oct. 23 DHEC released a statement that a shellfish bed in Charleston County was reopened. “Water quality data indicate that the approved harvesting area in St. Helena Sound north to the Folly Road/Highway 171 bridge in Charleston County is suitable for harvesting,” said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC’s Shellfish Sanitation Section in the press release.
