South Carolina Chief Justice Jean Toal will retire as the state’s top judge today as required by state law. Toal’s career has spanned from leaving law school in 1968 as one of 10 women practicing law in the state, to serving in the state House, to managing state courts as chief justice and presiding over the State Supreme Court since 1988.
