The Republican National Convention in Cleveland technically starts today, but it got a little jumpstart yesterday when Stephen Colbert briefly commandeered the stage as Caesar Flickerman, the flamboyant Hunger Games host from the movie series and a recurring Late Show character.
If you’ve been watching Colbert’s Late Show the past few months, you probably saw his recurring segment, “The Hungry for Power Games.” Every time a candidate for president would drop out, Colbert would don Flickerman’s neon wig and honor another fallen tribute with a montage and over-the-top reflection on this year’s ridiculous campaign.
In a shaky phone video posted to Twitter yesterday, Colbert’s bit landed close to home on stage at the RNC. Dressed as Flickerman, Colbert didn’t even need a hot mic to gavel in the “2016 Republican Hungry for Power Games,” only to be chased off stage by suspiciously convenient sunglasses-wearing security personnel. The CBS late-night host has said he’ll be attending and broadcasting from each party’s convention in the next few weeks, so we suspect that we’ll see the polished version of the stunt very soon.
