Last month Charleston County Public Libraries announced an initiative to collect new and gently used books throughout the month of June in honor of the late Cynthia Graham Hurd, a 31-year CCPL librarian killed at Mother Emanuel in 2015. Today CCPL announces yet another month-long book drive, held throughout July, with six county libraries serving as drop-off points. Bring new and gently used children’s books to Dorchester Road Regional Library, Hurd/St. Andrews Regional Library, Johns Island Regional Library, Main Library, Mt. Pleasant Regional Library, and Otranto Road Regional Library through July.

Partnering with Live5 News, Wells Fargo, and Mellow Mushroom, CCPL’s book drive supports Reading Partners, a local nonprofit whose trained volunteer reading partners deliver one-on-one tutoring to students who are six months or more behind grade level in reading.

“Reading Partners supplements in-school tutoring with a ‘take reading home’ component, which the book drive will directly impact. Each student enrolled in Reading Partners brings home more than 30 books per year,” says Reading Partners Board Chairman Richard Star.

You can also donate books at four local Mellow locations including the Mellow Mushrooms in North Charleston, Summerville, West Ashley, and downtown.
