Every spring the South Carolina Arts Commission presents the South Carolina Arts Awards — and two of the awards, Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Awards for the Arts, and Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Awards, are chosen from artists who have been nominated by the public. That means you! You can submit your online nomination for the Verner Awards online by Nov. 1 and for Folk Heritage Awards, by Nov. 15.

The Verner Awards recognize South Carolina arts organizations, patrons, artists, businesses and government entities. Past Charleston recipients include local jazz percussionist, arranger, composer, and producer Quentin Baxter; batik artist Mary Edna Fraser; and Lowcountry painter Jonathan Green.

The Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award was created by S.C. legislature in 1987 to recognize lifetime achievement in the traditional arts; up to four artists and one advocate may receive awards. Contact Folklife & Traditional Arts Program Director Laura Marcus Green to determine whether your nominee is eligible.
