UPDATE: Sad news, Basic Kitchen announced on Istagram Stories that the screening has been canceled due to expected rain.

Not only do I love romantic comedies, I believe diminishing them to “chick flick” generalizations is bullshit. I don’t subscribe to the notion that only The English Patient-levels of drama can depict real love. And no romantic comedy proves this point better than holiday classic Love Actually.

The 2003 film laces the lives of a dozen or so characters as they inch toward the “most wonderful time of the year” in all of its messy glory. There’s a failing rockstar, a love sick middle schooler, a daft author, and a scene with Emma Thompson listening to Joni Mitchell and holding back tears after discovering her husband’s adultery before pulling herself together and getting her daughter in a lobster costume to the school play that I maintain to this day deserved an Oscar. That’s real life, y’all. Suffice it to say, gimme The Big Sick, High Fidelity, or Amelie over Meet Joe Black any day.

Anyone who agrees with me will appreciate what Basic Kitchen has going on tomorrow (Wed. Dec. 20) night. For one night only, the Wentworth Street restaurant will project holiday classic Love Actually in their heated courtyard starting at 6 p.m.

Basic Kitchen suggests attendees “Bring a warm coat or blanket” for the event. The restaurant will serve holiday cocktails and hot veggie curry to accompany the film.
