35,000: The number of new jobs the Charleston area will add in the next five years. The Charleston Regional Development Alliance’s “Talent Demand Study” found that of the new jobs, 80% will be in: production and mechanical, hospitality, medical, business operations, software and IT, and personal services. Due to the way census tracts are drawn, part of downtown that has been overrun with high-end development in recent years has been named a federal ‘Opportunity Zone,’ meaning that developers and businesspeople could reap federal benefits being pumped into the program. Meant to help poor communities, the program is applicable because — despite being the location of high end restaurants and hotels — the small population that lives there is mostly students, which brings the average household income down to the “severely distressed” area.
