While northerners head for pumpkin spice lattes to combat cooling temperatures, Charlestonians prefer to get a little messy with a saltier companion during the fall season. The open-faced steamed oyster sandwich on a saltine cracker is one proven method, although many just shoot them right down the hatch. Here are a few roasts —listed chronologically — that are worth checking out in the coming months:
Tues. Oct. 23
The Charleston Home Builders Association is hosting an oyster roast for members and non-members at Oyster Point in Mt. Pleasant. The PAC fundraiser features all-you-can-eat bivalves and an open bar with the purchase of a ticket.
Thurs. Oct. 25
Take the elevator up to the top floor of The Restoration Hotel for steamed singles, fried chicken, and seasonal beverages. The Watch Rooftop Kitchen offers guests the chance for an Instagram-able sunset picture while enjoying the grub.
Sun. Oct. 28
Charleston Outdoor Adventures hosts its 2nd annual creek sweep and oyster roast with Charleston Waterkeeper. Enjoy kayaking on Folly creek while helping rid the estuaries of trash and debris from 12-2 p.m. before shucking away at the post-sweep oyster roast.
Fri. Nov. 2
Join in the fun at the 14th Annual Friends of the Hunley Oyster Roast, which takes place at the Visitor Center Bus Shed. Saddle up next to a neighbor at the long tables for all-you-can-eat BBQ and oysters starting at 7 p.m.
Sun. Nov. 4
Fleet Landing’s Executive Chef DelJuan Murphy serves up oysters, chowder, and signature drinks at this years Fall Harvest at Fresh Future Farm in North Charleston. The event supports the farm’s fall and winter farming efforts.
That same day, The Wagener Terrace Neighborhood Association hosts an Oyster Roast and BBQ at Lowndes Grove Plantation featuring a band, jump castle, and food from Westendorff Catering.
Sun. Nov. 11
Enjoy all-you-can-eat bivalves while watching the sunset at Bowens Island during this year’s Oysters for Autism. There’s live music and a silent auction, with proceeds going to the Lowcountry Autism Foundation.
Edisto Island residents and visitors can also enjoy a roast on the 11th at Sand Creek Farm featuring steamed oysters and a Lowcountry buffet. Edisto Gumbo will perform at the event supporting conservation efforts on and around Edisto.
Fri. Nov 16
The Palmetto Society is upping the ante at their annual roast with food from Sticky Fingers and local food trucks like the Immortal Lobster. Craft beer from Charleston favorites Revelry and Low Tide Brewing are available for sipping while listening to live music by Me & Mr. Jones.
Sat. Nov 17
Riverfront Park in North Charleston is the venue for the 19th Annual Chili Cook Off & Oyster Roast in support of the Charleston Animal Society. Form your own chili team or sit back and enjoy roasted oysters, live music, and refreshments at the state’s largest nonprofit animal welfare event. Last year brought over 7,000 attendees to the park, with many departing the roast with an adoptable animal waiting for a new home.
On that same day, CofC alumni reconnect with old friends at the Cistern Yard over oysters, hot dogs, and craft beer. The Bluestone Ramblers provide the musical backdrop while student organizations, sororities, and fraternities host mini reunions in the yard.
Sun. Nov. 18
Head to the James Island Yacht Club for oysters, BBQ, and music. Charleston Community Sailing hosts the 12th annual fundraising event, with proceeds going to the group’s mission to provide public access to sailing.
On the same day, Swig & Swine’s Mt. Pleasant location at Shipyard Park is hosting a live fire oyster roast and pig pickin’. A $35 ticket provides guests unlimited oysters and whole hog BBQ, with activities like axe-throwing to keep you entertained after filling up on the food.
Fri. Nov. 30
Find the finest local Folly River steamed oysters at the Fifty Six Men Association’s annual oyster roast. $10 buys you as many as you can put down, with proceeds going to the Payne Church Youth Initiative.
