Every year, thousands of people near and far bundle up, pop in their earbuds, and take off on the Charleston Marathon (or half marathon), winding their way through downtown Charleston all the way up to North Charleston.

What many runners and sideline gawkers don’t know is that this race benefits more than just their health. The Charleston Marathon, sponsored by O2 Fitness, is the largest annual fundraiser for local nonprofit, Engaging Creative Minds. In addition to raising money for the organization, the race is an opportunity for community engagement; Engaging Creative Minds needs 400 volunteers during race weekend.

You can sign up to volunteer on race weekend — opportunities vary from Expo set-up to information booth assistance to aid stations — as early as, well, today.

Engaging Creative Mind’s mission is to “inspire the creative and innovative potential of all students to achieve academically and become more imaginative, adaptable, and productive adults.”

According to operations coordinator Alicia Modoor proceeds from the marathon support grants to Lowcountry schools; last year’s race funded projects at seven area schools.
