Twenty-one-year-old rapper Semkari is one of five local hip-hop artists who have been performing house shows and venues together for the past two years as a form of solidarity — if one emcee gets a chance to shine, then all they do.

After seeing his group emcee Mynt’s first hip-hop night last month, he looks forward to more downtown bars and venues recognizing the relevance of local rap music. Besides his two new songs dropping next month, let’s see what else Semkari is focusing on in this week’s Beat Juice

What is your biggest creative inspiration right now?
At this very moment, Toro y Moi

What song is stuck in your head today?
“Flashing Lights” by Kanye West for some reason. The hook and the melody is too good and too catchy.

Last album you bought?
“Assume Form” by James Blake since it recently dropped

Recent musical discovery?
HOMESHAKE, shout out Beckett Wilson for putting me on

Fave local venue?
The Purple Buffalo to perform a show. Music Farm to see a show.

What’s your best, go-to t-shirt?
My Black Sabbath Supreme Shirt, love the purple on black especially when I wear my necklace.

Your hangover cure is …
An Açaí bowl and red Gatorade always gets me right.

Last show you went to?
I don’t remember honestly. It was a house show for a indie band from out of town.

What station’s always on your radio dial?
107 Chuck FM or Z93 JAMZ

Your musical style can be compared to?
My close friends say Future or Travis Scott

What band have you been meaning to listen to?
Hmm… I would say Led Zeppelin.

What’s next for you?
Shows, videos, song or album releases? The next show I have is in Columbia on March 27th. I need more gigs in Charleston though. Between now and then I will be releasing two songs “All Night” and “4.” It’s gonna be a great year for the scene.
