Local singer-songwriter Whitney Hanna recently put out the first single off her upcoming summer album Yellow House, and she’s now also performing in new duo, the Candy Cigarettes, with Caryn Egan (Michael Martin & the Beautiful Mess) for some girl power fun. Every Candy Cigarettes show will feature a special guest to round off Hanna and Egan’s harmonies with a voice. This mystery trio will have Hanna on guitar and flute and Egan on viola, and then who knows — it depends on the show. Let’s hear what else Hanna is getting into these days in this week’s Beat Juice.

1. Tell us about the Candy Cigarettes
Do you remember candy cigarettes back in the day? I remember as a kid we were not allowed to have them even though they were just candy, because let’s face it, they are not such a good influence. But that fun rebellion made me love them. When playing music with such a strong female musician like Caryn Egan, I feel that fun rebellion on stage too.

2. What song is stuck in your head today?
“Motorhome” by The Mother Hips

3. Last album you bought?
Wide Awake by Rayland Baxter

4. Recent musical discovery?
Laura Marling, a British folk singer-songwriter

5. Fave local venue?
Moe’s Crosstown! I play at Moe’s every Friday with Jeff Caldwell. The guys behind the bar are the best.

6. What’s your best go-to T-shirt?
I love my Cyndi Lauper T-shirt

7. Your hangover cure is …
Not drinking. It works great!

8. Last show you went to?
Lake Street Dive at The Music Hall.

9. What station’s always on your radio dial?
Ohm Radio

10. What band have you been meaning to listen to?

Villanova. I keep missing their shows but am dying to see them.

11. What’s next for you?
My new single, “Yellow House,” was just released! The full album will be released summer 2019. Caryn Egan and I are super excited about the Candy Cigarettes and have gigs scheduled around Charleston as well as some traveling in our future. We definitely plan to share our original music with you, too. You can hear me on Thomas Champagne’s newly released album Love, and you can check out our music video, “Candy,” that was filmed here in Charleston. The next music video is being filmed this week at Planet Follywood. Check the City Paper music calendar to catch the Candy Cigarettes’ next show.
