A Twitter hashtag calling for U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham to resign began trending on Tuesday after Graham encouraged Donald Trump Jr. to plead the Fifth rather than answer questions in front of a Senate committee.
Yesterday, the Republican-controlled committee subpoenaed the president’s son to testify about his communication with Russian officials. Graham, a lawyer and influential member of the Senate, had some political/legal advice for Trump Jr.
“You just show up and plead the Fifth and it’s over with,” Graham said on Monday, according to the Washington Post. Sen. Graham chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects individuals from being forced to incriminate themselves, exposing them to potential criminal accusations.
“This whole thing is nuts,” Graham continued. “To me, it’s over.”
The most recent push from Democratic Coalition, an anti-Trump super PAC that apparently just realized that Lindsey Graham will say or do whatever crap he needs to to remain “relevant.”
The group has targeted Graham as one of eight senators it hopes to unseat in 2020.
[content-1] Graham has done his best to help protect President Donald Trump in the past few months, a move that has sparked outrage from Democratic groups. In the days following Attorney General William Barr’s letter characterizing special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation, Graham dismissed further examination of the report into Russian interference. “I’m not going to do any more. Enough already. It’s over,” he said.
A few weeks earlier, Mueller reportedly complained in a letter to Barr that his analysis of the report “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of his work.
In recent weeks, critics have trotted out footage of Graham assailing President Bill Clinton, saying his alleged misdeeds should not go unpunished.
U.S. Sen. Richard Burr (R, N.C.), who chairs the Senate committee, said that Trump Jr. was subpoenaed after he reportedly backed out of agreed-to voluntary interviews. The committee is said to want to ask about his 2017 interview with the committee.
