A S.C. law firm was allegedly running an illegal operation targeting veterans and retirees, where veterans could sell their future benefits for retirees to invest in. The law firm, the Upstate Law Group, would allegedly then take money from each deal, netting millions of dollars in profit. Veterans are prohibited by federal law from assigning their pension or disability payments to others. Candy Kern-Fuller, the owner of the law firm, has only agreed to stop the scheme after being sued by veterans. Source: P&C

A new record has been set for the S.C. Education Lottery after 1,400 winners all chose 2-2-2-2 for their Saturday Midday card. The Education Lottery will pay out $3.4 million dollars, so between $2,500 and $5,000 per winner. Quite the educated guess. Source: AP

MUSC has received a new grant for $833,190 from the National Institute of Health’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term. The goal of the grant is to find scientific solutions to the opioid crisis. Source: Charleston Regional Business Journal

On Saturday, five pilot whales beached themselves on Edisto Island. The cause of the beaching isn’t known, however, the whales that beached were the same whales that had previously beached themselves twice in Georgia since July. Source: P&C
